Rocketwar (in Greek “Rouketopolemos”) is how you can describe the Easter celebration in Vrontados on Chios in one word. In the night of the Orthodox Easter Saturday the sky over the village is lit up by thousands of fireworks flying over the houses.
During the celebration of the midnight service of Easter Sunday the two rival churches Agios Markos and Panagia Erithiani perform the Rocketwar. The aim of each side is to hit the bell of the opposite church.
The whole event can be divided into three parts. Firstly, we have the preparation which starts some weeks before Easter – its main part is building the rocket. Then we have the Easter Saturday where the last preparations are made and everyone waits for the sun to set and the celebration to start. Finally, we have the Rocketwar itself, the long-awaited traditional event.
